The Coastal Challenge — Costa Rica

Official competition rules

The rules of the race

Condensed from the official 2027 Runner's Guide. These cover conduct, health, the course, mandatory equipment and protests — the framework every competitor agrees to. The Technical Committee resolves anything not covered here, always under fair play.

01

Technical Committee

A Technical Committee (CT) safeguards the competitive, health, integrity, ethical and regulatory standards of the race. It is made up of the Race Director, the Course Logistics Director and the Chief of Medical Services.

  • Any situation not covered by these rules is resolved by the CT, always respecting the principles of fair play and equity.
  • Race officials use their best judgement to determine whether an unfair advantage has been gained, and report it immediately to the CT.
  • CT decisions are final and not subject to appeal.
02

Athlete conduct

  • Practise good sportsmanship at all times, and be responsible for your own safety and that of others.
  • Know, understand and follow the competition rules, and treat athletes, officials, volunteers and spectators with respect.
  • Do not litter anywhere on the route. Dispose of everything only at aid stations or designated points, and carry out all your own items.
  • Do not seek an unfair advantage through vehicles, external objects or course shortcuts — doing so risks disqualification.
03

Health

  • Competitors must be in excellent health and physical condition.
  • Cutoff times are set for every stage — at a point on the route or at the finish line. The CT sets and communicates them, may modify them during the race on technical grounds, and that decision is final.
  • Every competitor must carry basic accident insurance.
04

The competition

  • Follow the route described by the organization. If you lose the course, return under your own power to the last point you left it and continue.
  • The route is fully marked, but carrying the GPX files (linked in the road book) and being able to consult them during the race is mandatory.
  • Failing any segment of the course without evidence of rectification results in disqualification. Always follow aid-station staff instructions.
  • Two distances exist: Expedition and Adventure. An Expedition runner who cannot continue or is disqualified may join Adventure, but cannot earn a finisher medal. An Adventure runner who cannot continue or is disqualified cannot earn a finish medal, but may join certain stages with CT authorization.
  • Cumulative stage time forms the ranking, by distance and gender, from fastest to slowest, with any penalties added.
05

Mandatory equipment

  • A hydration system with at least 1 litre capacity, carried throughout the competition without exception.
  • A mobile phone with a local SIM (Kölbi recommended) to reach the organization in an emergency.
  • Your own liquid container (soft flask, cup or bottle) to receive aid at the stations.
  • An emergency whistle and a headlamp with good batteries and at least 50 lumens.
06

Penalties & protests

  • Disqualification covers unsportsmanlike conduct, unfair advantage, failing any part of the course, ignoring officials' instructions, and aggressive behaviour, among others.
  • A disqualified athlete forfeits any medal or recognition for the position obtained.
  • Every competitor may file a post-stage protest. The CT reviews it and its decision is final. A successful protest reinstates the athlete to their previous position.

Final stage details and cutoff times are confirmed at the mandatory race briefing.
